Speak Essay Speak is an inspirational story of a young girl struggling to manage her teenage life. Melinda, the protagonist of the book, transformed from a withdrawn girl to a outgoing one. Melinda changed dramatically from the beginning of the book to the end. Melinda started off the story as an outcast in her school of Merryweather High School. She was kneed in the back by a girl at the school pep rally and taunted by kids in the hallways. All of this happened because Melinda called the cops at a summer party. But she did this because she was raped by Andy Evans, a senior at the party, and everyone is unaware of this. Melinda rarely talks to people, and when she does, she never really opens up. She creates a safe place in a janitors closet where she goes to be alone, and when she goes home she just sleeps or keeps to herself. The most important turning point in Melindas change in attitude and behavior is when she talks to her art teacher, Mr. Freeman. Throughout the story, Melinda became close with Mr. Freeman, and admired him. Melindas art project was a tree so he gave her the advice to cut off all the trees dead parts, so the tree can grow and prosper again. This gives Melinda the courage to tell her ex-best friend Rachel, who was currently dating Andy Evans, about the rape. Once she told Rachel that, the truth was out. At the end of the story, Melinda had released her burden that had been eating away at her. She befriended her old friends again, and she felt like a whole new person. Melinda became a strong person who was not afraid to speak up anymore. She opened up to her parents and friends, improved her grades, and started a normal teenage life. Melindas story is one of overcoming fear and speaking up for herself. With the help of Mr. Freeman, she turned her situation around and stood up for what was right. Melinda freed herself by speaking. Melinda changed dramatically from the beginning of the book to the end.

Before the mid 1960s came around, psychologist concluded that neural circuits in a fully mature brain and nervous system was completely developed in which the brain can not produce new neurons. What the critics didnt know was that they are about to be dramatically shocked because their hypothesis will be proven wrong through neurogensis and neural plasticity. The brain we once thought we knew turns out the be completely altered than the brain once discovered in the late 1800s and 1900s by Santiago Ramon y Cajal, Camillo Golgi, and Wilhelm Waldeyer. Santiago Ramon y Cajal was a Spanish Neuroanatomist, born in Petilla, Navarra, close to the Pyrenees Mountains. Ramon y Cajal studied medicine, teaches anatomy, history, and also teaches pathological anatomy. Ramon y Cajal made numerous contributions to the study of neural plasticity. He was the first to propose the ideas of the changing of neurons, the organization of the brains networks, and the neurons functions through new experiences in life. The brain has the ability to change as a result to usage, exercise, and experience. The concept of neural plasticity is proven by an American research psychologist by the name of Mark Richard Rosenzweig according to the Essentials of Psychology. Rosenzweig found out in animal studies on neural plasticity that the brain sustains developing anatomically by adapting and transforming itself into its adolescences based on life challenges and changed the assumed wisdom that the brain reached full capability in the childhood stages of early life. Mark Rosenzweig created an amazing park for rats so he could observe the significant effects in a developed habitation on neural development. He had half of the rats live together in a cage full of obstacles to have fun with. The other half of the rats lived in solitary confinement without any ladders to climb on or toys to expand their mind with. Rosenzweig found out incredible information that changed the worlds view on neural plasticity. He disc overed that the rats that resided in the enriched environment increased cerebral cortex volumes and developed heavier, broader brains. He also found out that the rats in the enriched environment cultivated more dendrites and synapse in their brains than the ones in solitary confinement. Visual stimulated rats increased 20 percent more synaptic connections per neuron in the visual cortex. Also, the rats that were running between obstacles formed new synaptic connections in the cerebellum, the structure mainly dealing with balance and motor cortex coordination. Neural plasticity is remarkable information for human development and adaptation. Another interesting discovery that explains neural plasticity is the study on Albert Einsteins brain. Einstein had an average sized brain like any other human being but there was an important aspect that caught researchers attention. The visuospatial and mathematical region of Einsteins brain showed 15 percent larger than normal! Do you think you know why this happened? This happened because Albert Einstein constantly used and challenged the visuospatial and mathematical side of his average sized brain. Practice may not always make perfect, but its likely to create an impression on you brain, states Dr. Azar in 1996. I am a true believer of these words. I believe that you obtain the ability to do anything you want in life, but it is all up to what you decide on in life. Neural plasticity boils down to your mindset towards you life and how you perceive learning experiences. Leaders always have an impact on our lives. The leader affects us in our daily life and in our future too. Whether it good time or bad time. Theres always a need of a good leadership. The success of the business or industry depends upon the leader which you have chosen for the task and what leadership style he or she adopts. Leadership is in which you lead the whole group of peoples whether in business industries or sports. The contribution of the leadership should be effective in all the situations. In leadership a person who is leader should always have vision about the future he should forecast and should know the upcoming conditions and situation in the market or industry. In autocratic leadership the owner or the manager tries to make as many decisions as he can. He or she does not consult with anyone. In autocratic leadership the owner seem to have the most authority and he has full control on the decision making. When owner is making decision he or she does not care whether this will be acceptable by the other or not. Usually in this style owner want to have all authority with him he does not want to distribute the authority to different people. In this leadership style consultation with the member or colleagues is very low and decision making become a solitary process. Behavior theory says that you can learn leadership capabilities rather adopting them. Contingent theory: They assumption of contingent theory is there is no one best way to lead in the situations. There may be one style successful in one situation but May not work in the other. This theory tends to focus on more leadership style for success. This theory says that leader should act according to situation and should adopt different leadership style for success. Transformation theory: Transformation theory assumptions are that people follow that person who inspires them. Person with vision or passion can achieve great things. The style of transformational leader is great because it put passion and energy in everything. They care about you and want you to succeed in life. Transformation theory is that a leader develops a vision and then sells the vision by telling people what they have to achieve by motivating them. Then he or she find way forward mean he know how to lead. After that he remains centre of action. In transformation theory leader motivates people to achieve the goal. Leadership style you like: The leadership style which I like is transformation leadership because everything just revolve around you. You are the center of everything. You are the person who gives innovative idea to the people or vision then you know the way how you have to achieve this goal. After that you take the charge and you put energy in people which are working with you. You motivate them and you put this idea in their mind that success will be in the end. You take each and every person with you. This is why I like transformation leadership because you are the active member. Stages of group development: There are five stages of development: 1. Forming 2. Storming 3.Norming 4.Performing forming: Forming is where group is formed to achieve a task or to solve a problem. In this members have desire to be in the group. Member gets oriented to the task as well as to one other. Basically in forming group of people is gathering to achieve or discuss a goal. Storming: In this group member attempt to organize for the task. Individual have to mold their feeling and attitude for organization objective. In storming question are raised that who will be responsible for which thing. What will be the rules? What will be the reward system? There might be conflicts over leadership, structure and power. To move to next stage member should develop problem solving mentality. Norming: In norming group member share their idea so that they can reach to some decision. Everyone in willing to change their idea on fact and figure presented my other group members. During this stage member develop a scene of group. They try to understand other point of view. performing: In performing the group members works collaboratively and member care for everyone in the group. The group establishes a unique identity and members are interdependent. I performing member find solution to problem using appropriate control and they try to find effective and satisfactory results. Coordinator: A coordinator is a person who is leader in the group. This person is trusted, accepted and is committed to team goals and objectives. Coordinator is a person who listen everyone . Sharper: Shaper is person who motivates the team member for the goal they have to achieve. Usually there are two to three sharper. Plant: Plan is a person with high IQ. Plans are more related to major issues. Plant takes approaches to team functioning and problems. Resource Investigator: Resource investigator is a person who is always busy because he is in search of opportunities and develops plans. They are usually very social people. They usually work outside the group. Company worker/implementer: Company worker works for the team in practical way. They work of the task with is given to them and implementer are those who figure prominently in position of responsibility in large organization. Monitor / evaluator: monitor or evaluator is a person who sees the work of the people. Monitor evaluators contribute particularly at times of crucial decision making because they are capable of evaluating competing proposals. West. Social Construction of Gender Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã TodayÃ¢â¬â¢s society plays a very important role in the construction of gender. Gender is a type of issue that has raised many questions over the years in defining and debating if both male and female are equal. Today gender is constructed in four different ways. The first way gender is defined is by the family in which a child is raised. Second is the society in which a child interacts; makes friends and enemies. The third is our school system and our board of education. And the last but not least is our own self conscious. Each of the above four ways have a unique way of molding and helping an individual define his/her gender. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Lets take the first one in perspective. The family is a very important factor in defining our gender. Our gender starts to define as soon as we are born. If a boy is born in a family, the family members would buy toys like monster trucks, race cars, action hero and toys that inspire a male behavior. As oppose to if a girl is born, the family members would buy dolls, and cute dresses, and stuffed bears. They would inspire her to behave soft and kind like a female should behave. Parents would allow their sons to stay out late and be little more liberal on them. And they would not allow their daughter to stay our late and be a little strict. Dads would expect their sons to help him in the garage or any other project around the house and moms expect their daughters to help them in kitchen. All of these characteristics are not unusual or our of ordinary, this has been the tradition for hundreds of ears and as far as I can see it will still remain the same. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Society is a social factors that has many ways in which its mold a individual and defines his/her gender. Society includes your friends, mentors, enemies, and our co-workers and significant others. If you are a boy you usually hand around with guys, playing football, basketball and other sports. A boy is expected to have Ã¢â¬Å"MachonessÃ¢â¬ inside him when he grows up. If you are a girl, you would usually hang around girls, playing indoor games, watching soaps, and going shopping every now and them. A society expect a boy to be the solid figure in a family. A man who can earn the bread for the family and women to take care of kids and the house. Jobs out in our society defines gender. They include our family, society, educational systems and self conscious. There are other cultural products that effect the gender within these four categories. For example the notion that women are physically and weaker then men and that they are much more emotional then men are. I think no one should be judged on what there gender. The word Ã¢â¬Å"GenderÃ¢â¬ should be used less and less and individuals should be judged on their accomplishment and work rather then gender. Society have been defining and constructing gender for many years. But in 20th century we should all construct gender not according to what one can do and what not, but what mental qualities they have. We should define men as courageous and ambitious. Male gender should be define as father, son, and a leader, instead of someone who are physically stronger then women. Female gender should be define as mothers, sister and others who are caring, loving and care taking, instead of weak individuals.

History Assignment The Kingdom of Thailand formerly known as Siam, is found in South East Asia. This country is renowned for having the most recorded reigns in the world. (1) About 64 million people live in Thailand and its largest city is Bangkok which is also its capital city. Thailand experienced rapid economic growth between 1985 and 1995, (2) and today, it is a newly industrialised country well renowned with tourists. Architecture in Thailand is a vital part of the community as it represents both the struggle of living there because of severe weather and also the cultural significance of Thailand and their religious beliefs. Due to the heat from the afternoon sun in Thailand, the bottom part of the house is cooler. The houses reflect the climate and tackle better the attacks from nature. (3) Thailand managed to develop appropriate regional variations in its religious and vernacular buildings. Today, in Thailand, especially in Bangkok, one finds a great deal of contemporary architecture, as well as a contemporary twist on the more traditional Thai architecture, such as the stilt houses. (4, 5) This outlines in brief the contrasting difference between my two Thai architects named Duangrit Bunnag and Dr. Pinyo Suwankiri. Dr. Pinyo Suwankiri was born in Songkla in 1937 while Duangrit Bunnag was born in 1966 in Bangkok. Though there is a huge age gap between these two architects, both of them flourished in the last three decades with their recognised projects in Thailand. Pinyo Suwankiri has dedicated a lot of time and put in tremendous work in order to preserve the dignity and style of Thai architecture. The traditional form of Thai architecture is close to his heart and Dr. Suwankiri treasures it deeply which is ... ... his work while Dr.Suwankiri strived to preserve the dignity of the conventional Thai stilt structure. The projects of Pinyo are smaller in comparison to those of Duangrit. Here is a table from some information I gathered which states and compares the achievements they have received: Quoting China Williams (2009) from the book Thailand, Dr. Suwankiri is a traditional building specialist whose work is ubiquitous and the blueprint for an institutional aesthetic of traditional architecture. Within the frigid pages of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, death haunts the living as time sways through the air. A reunion between Dewey and Susan Kidwell, portrays the endless chain of life and death, as the waves of turmoil of the Clutter familyÃ¢â¬â¢s death to the execution the murderers. Fields of wheat wave to the dead and the blue sky protecting a bright future ahead.Truman Capote displays the cycle of life and death and the cleansing of the curse left behind, after the murder of the Clutters. Vivid life surrounded by a frozen cemetery creates a contradiction of life and death. Capote introduces death as the Ã¢â¬Å"wreaths, brown roses, and rain faded ribbons still lay upon the raw earth. Ã¢â¬ Capote incorporates lifeless objects, and the ribbons which have been fading away with the rain, as the turmoil of the Clutt erÃ¢â¬â¢s death on the town diminishes as time continues. Using dark and fading colors displays the disappearance of the ClutterÃ¢â¬â¢s death in the townspeopleÃ¢â¬â¢s lives.Time continues to remove the effects of the CluttersÃ¢â¬â¢ death, and Ã¢â¬Å"close by, fresher petals spilled across a new mound. Ã¢â¬ The fresh petals pertain to a new era which the living continues as time disperses the clouds of chaos. Capote incorporates a transition of location, close by, which also signifies the changes which will occur benefitting the town. Truman Capote conveys the effects of time through characters, Ã¢â¬Å"a willowy girl with white-gloved hands, a smooth cap of dark-honey hair, and long, elegant leg. The description of Susan Kidwell, Nancy ClutterÃ¢â¬â¢s friend, who stands at the CluttersÃ¢â¬â¢ grave, provides the ever haunting spirits of the murder. CapoteÃ¢â¬â¢s precise description of the girl conjures an image within the mind. Willow trees mean graceful and a symbol of joy, which conveys SusanÃ¢â¬â¢s beauty. People gather around during the times of the CluttersÃ¢â¬â¢ immediate death, but the people begin to realize life will continue with or without the Clutters. Susan develops into a beautiful girl for whom Dewey does not recognize and yet she is a witness to the murders.The clouds of the past clear as the scars of the hearts of close friends and witnesses will be carried on through life. Physical changes of the town and the characters display people moving on in their lives and not dwelling on the murder. The changing lives of the witness are continuously haunted by the memories of future plans and shattering through the night of the CluttersÃ¢â¬â¢ deaths. Capote reveals the change of the era of turmoil during the CluttersÃ¢â¬â¢ death and the rebirth of civilization by Susan Kidwell attending her Ã¢â¬Å"junior year at K.UÃ¢â¬ ¦ Nancy and I planned to go to college together. We were going to be roommates. Ã¢â¬ Susan reminisces of h er past with Nancy, all their plans of college torn apart, displaying continuous memories of horror which she witnessed. Susan also becomes the embodiment of Nancy. Capote foretells SusanÃ¢â¬â¢s future through her characteristics, bright and cheerful. The unchanging setting of the town remains entangled of the crime, and Ã¢â¬Å"thereÃ¢â¬â¢s some talk about paving the street. But you know HolcombÃ¢â¬ ¦ donÃ¢â¬â¢t spent much time there. Capote incorporates allusion into the novel but paving a new bright path on top of a bloody road which changed the town. Holcomb attempts to cover their past by repainting the road. The new road also foreshadows the new future presented to the townspeople, but Ã¢â¬Å"Dewey looked at the gray stone inscribed with four names, and the date of their death: November 15, 1959. Ã¢â¬ The detective of the murders still remains stunned at the grave site, unable to understand the complexity of the crime which leads him to contradict his own beliefs thro ugh the deaths of others.CapoteÃ¢â¬â¢s diction within the writing contains many meanings; the word inscribed, which are permanently set in stone, also literally set in stone. Contradicting life and death, where death continues to walk aside life instead of ending in the dark past. Capote illustrates the contradiction between the past and the future through nature. The beautiful skies and the fields of hope for the relations which hold the witnesses and CluttersÃ¢â¬â¢ together, blossom into a new future. Truman Capote foreshadows the future of the town and the witnesses through nature.Hope rises in Ã¢â¬Å"the big sky, the whisper of wind voices in the wind-bent wheat. Ã¢â¬ The curse of the CluttersÃ¢â¬â¢ death is cleansed under the vast pure sky and the voice of the wind seals the evil which wanders in their hearts. The imagery of voices of the wind also alludes to the peace in the air. Capote incorporates alliteration and consonance, the multiple Ã¢â¬Å"wÃ¢â¬ and Ã¢â¬Å" sÃ¢â¬ sounds convey gentleness and peacefulness. Calm breezes, and a sunlit sky where Ã¢â¬Å"SueÃ¢â¬ ¦ disappeared down the path, a pretty girl in a hurry, her smooth hair winging, shining-just such a young woman as Nancy might have been. Ã¢â¬ Susan follows the path of the deceased Nancy and no negative aura is seen as she rushes off. SusanÃ¢â¬â¢s smooth shining hair swinging foreshadows a bright future. Susan also inherits a trait from Nancy as well, the gift of time, Ã¢â¬Å"he told her it was past fourÃ¢â¬ ¦ IÃ¢â¬â¢ve got to runÃ¢â¬ ¦ nice to have seen you, Mr. Dewey. Ã¢â¬ Susan continues to follow the footsteps of her friend. Susan is no longer haunted by Nancy but receives NancyÃ¢â¬â¢s blessings as Susan continues to live through life.Capote paints a scene of peace and prosperity as time passes and foretells the fortunes of the witness as they continue through their lives. Capote creates internal conflict between the living and the murders of the Clutters. The deaths convey distrust between each other, but time resolves distrust and creates a new civil life for the town. A new future opens up to the people and a fresh start begins; the deaths resemble no more than an unfortunate event in the towns past as everyone moves on in their lives.

McCandless was brave enough to do things most people would not even think about doing. Ã¢â¬Å"He was looking for more adventure and freedom than todayÃ¢â¬â¢s society gives people,Ã¢â¬ comments one of ChrisÃ¢â¬â¢s friendsÃ¢â¬ (Krakauer 174). What modern society offers did not appeal to Chris McCandless; he wanted a different life that most people had themselves. He saw the influences society puts on our lives and decided he did not want to live that way. Ã¢â¬Å"No longer would he answer to Chris McCandless; he was now Alexander Supertramp, master of his own destinyÃ¢â¬ (23). McCandless, now known as Alexander Supertramp, did not want to be held back in any way; to insure he would get full freedom he changed his name so he was able to start fresh. McCandless took charge of his new life and was brave to be able to just leave everything he knew and was comfortable with to start new. Whatever makes you happy you should pursue, McCandless did just that even with all the negati ve people telling him it was a bad idea. People find happiness in multiple ways; through relationships, nature, religion, and many more ways. In a letter to Franz, Alex writes, Ã¢â¬Å"You are wrong if you think joy emanates only or principally from human relationships. God has placed it all around usÃ¢â¬ (57). McCandless knew that although it is nice to have relationships you can find happiness in nature and that is where he found true happiness. Ã¢â¬Å"He is smiling in the picture, and there is no mistaking the look in his eyes: Chris McCandless was at peace, serene as a monk gone to GodÃ¢â¬ (199). Before McCandlessÃ¢â¬â¢s death he took a picture and in the picture he was at peace and happy even though he was alone and going through the pain of starvation. He was happy because he finally found true happiness. McCandless found happiness in ways most did not, once he found what made him happy he pursued in no matter what the consequences were. Ã¢â¬Å"In the final postcard he sent to Wayne Westerberg, McCandless hadÃ written, if this adventure proves fatal and you donÃ¢â¬â¢t ever hear from me again I want you to know youÃ¢â¬â¢re a great man. I now walk into the wildÃ¢â¬ (133). He wrote this to acknowledge the chance that he might not survive. He does not want to die but he knows that he is embarking on a dangerous adventure. McCandless also feels that the whole adventure is worth it, however, for the real experience of living completely independently and freely, and his excitement was expressed at the end of the final postcard to Westerberg. People called McCandless foolish for his mistakes but everyone makes mistakes. Ã¢â¬Å"Instead of feeling distraught over this turn of events, moreover, McCandless was exhilarated: He saw the flash flood as an opportunity to shed unnecessary baggageÃ¢â¬ (29). Although he made a mistake of sleeping in an area where there are flash floods and lost his car, he accepted it and used it as a way to get further into his adventure by just living off what he needed. Ã¢â¬Å"Chastity and moral purity were qualities McCandless mulled over long and oftenÃ¢â¬ (65). Although Chris made fatal mistakes he knew what was right and wrong and would think about it a lot. McCandless overall had respect and good morals but made fatal mistakes which led to his death. Ã¢â¬Å"Awkwardly, s tiff with fear, I started working my way back down. The rime gradually thickened. After descending about eighty feet, I got back on reasonably solid ground. I stopped for a long time to let my nerves settle, then leaned back from my tools and stared up at the face above, searching for a hint of solid ice, for some variation in the underlying rock strata, for anything that would allow passage over the frosted slabs. (137)Ã¢â¬ That quote really explains what a brave man he is and how he can overcome obstacles that the others like Rosellini, McCunn, and Waterman couldnÃ¢â¬â¢t. People who did not think McCandless was courageous thought he was a young foolish man who caused many pain with his leaving and death. Chris did make mistakes but so did others and that does not mean he is foolish. He did not want to cause others pain but he needed to start fresh and away from everyone he knew. Ã¢â¬Å"Alex is a nut in my book,Ã¢â¬ wrote a resident of Healy, the hamlet at the head of the Stampede Trail. Ã¢â¬Å"The author describes a man who has given away a small fortune , forsaken a living family, abandoned his car, watch and map and burned the last of his money before traipsing off into the Ã¢â¬ËwildernessÃ¢â¬â¢ west of HealyÃ¢â¬ (71). Although McCandless did all of those things, he did it to have a freshÃ start. He did not want to be held back from anything and in the end it made him happy. A reader of the Outside magazine asked, Ã¢â¬Å"Why would any son cause his parents and family such permanent and perplexing pain?Ã¢â¬ (71) McCandless did not want to cause his loved ones pain but ended up causing them pain since the only way he could find true happiness was to leave everyone he loved. Although some may not be able to see the reasons McCandless left all his opportunities and loved ones behind to go on an adventure that caused him his death, he only did it because that was what made him happy. Chris McCandless was a young man that went against society and found happiness in things most people would be afraid to try. He had the bravery it took to go against society to find his happiness and although he made mistakes he did what he enjoyed even if people thought he was foolish. People should not judge others for what they do that makes them happy and being brave enough to do something diffe rent than what most do.
